If ever a building had personality it was these cooling towers because their looks certainly didn’t get them any credit. And yet most of Cape Town was very sad to see them go. With all the hype and society’s obsession with viewing destruction I felt I had to get in on the action and share my shot. Trust the only night of bad weather to null my first idea (which will be used on another project soon!), so I decided to turn my view onto the Cape Town horizon in which the towers had made their fame. It seemed only right that Table Mountain frame the towers, so I sourced my located on the edge of the neighboring township, Langa. For the time of day this would also give the best light so I was pleased. Of course as luck has it, the clouds came over and ruined that idea. So, with only minutes to go and too much traffic to maneuver I had to shift my gaze yet again, and I cant believe I had missed this all along – The lives of those who have lived in the shadows of the towers for all these decades. I was amazed at how many people weren’t interested in what was happening, and if they did not know, why they weren’t questioning why thousands of people were lining the streets. If witnessing 21 600 tons of concrete falling to the ground didn’t catch their interest I wonder what does? What is it that you found interesting in watching such an event?
I think its celebration of Cape Town becoming just that much more beautiful. Now about beautifying these living conditions a little…
